The French Society

French was introduced as a subject for G.C.E. A/L students almost 25 years ago. Later, French was introduced as an optional or additional subject for G.C.E.O/L students. Students in the G.C.E. (A/L) Language class offered French as a subject and did remarkably well, obtaining distinction and credit passes. It was only in the year 2013, that the students along with their French teacher Ms. Nimali Wickremasinghe decided to form a French Society. The French Day was held on the 4th of April 2013 in St. Euphrasia's Hall with the Directress of Alliance Francaise of Kandy, Mme Laure Fernado as Chief Guest and Monsieur Sureen de Silva as Guest of Honour. The Chief Guest gave an impressive and insightful talk on the importance of learning French.

A skit was enacted on King Louis XIV Other items included a ballet, a dance Mardi Gras a drama titled Blanche neige' Snow White, a French pop song and a parade of Medieval French clothing. It was an exciting morning and the students were commended for the high standards they maintained in all the items. Students participated in the Kingswood and St. Sylvesters College French Day Competitions and won 1st place in Group Singing Intermediate and Senior and solo singing Intermediate and Senior.
French is a language that is extensively used and studied in many parts of the globe. It is a language of prestige and power. The English language leans heavily on French with its borrowings in fashion, food etc. There is no doubt that the French Society which has left an indelible mark at its inception itself, will grow from strength to strength. For 'Language exerts hidden powerlike a moon on the tides'
